Man allegedly caused death of grandfather outside house

A MAN accused of dangerous driving causing the death of a grandfather during an incident in Tallaght, Dublin, has been sent forward for trial, reports Tom Tuite.

Dan O’Reilly, 57, was allegedly knocked down by a vehicle after shots were fired outside a house at Tymon North Road on the night of August 9, 2020.

In February, Gardai arrested John McDonagh, 34, of Manorfield Dale, Blanchardstown, Dublin.

He was later charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Mr O’Reilly.

He faced his third hearing at Dublin District Court on Thursday when gardai served him with a book of evidence.

The DPP directed “to proceed on indictment”. Accordingly, Judge Paula Murphy granted a return for trial order.

She told Mr McDonagh he was being sent forward for trial to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, where he will face his next hearing on May 27.

He must notify the prosecution within 14 days if he intended to use an alibi.

Judge Murphy acceded to an application from defence solicitor Tracy Horan to grant legal aid.

Earlier, Garda James Ward told the court the accused “made no reply to charge”.

There was no objection to bail.

Mr McDonagh, who has already surrendered his passport, was ordered to sign on three days a week at a Garda station, remain in the jurisdiction, and not apply for alternative travel documents.

In addition, he must remain contactable on the phone number he provided.

There was no objection to legal aid.

The court had heard Mr McDonagh was a father on social welfare and had to pay rent.

He has not yet indicated a plea.
