Man fatally injured after being struck by a hit-and-run vehicle

A TALLAGHT man was killed in a hit-and-run accident at Newlands Cross early on Sunday morning.

Peter Dikani Maunde (37), from Kilcarrig Green in Fettercairn, was fatally injured when he was struck by a car on the Naas Road inbound past Newlands Cross at approximately 4am on Sunday, January 31 last.

The stretch of road was closed for a number of hours to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision investigators.

The Gardaí suspect that Mr Maunde had been run over by a driver who failed to stop and they are following a definite line of enquiry.

The Gardaí wish to appeal for witnesses to contact Clondalkin Garda Station on 01-6667600, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Mr Maunde was a member of the Association of Malawians, who paid tribute to him as a family man loved at home and abroad.

“Our prayers are with all of his family both here and in Malawi,” a statement read.

Mr Maunde’s best friend Ken Mvula paid a tribute to him, saying: “It is sad losing our brother – it is a very big shock.”
