DANE Massey has signed for Drogheda United after earlier announcing that his incredible journey with Dundalk has drawn to a close.

The 32-year-old Knocklyon man, who has been an integral part of the defensive set-up at Oriel Park throughout his eight years with the club, has enjoyed a huge amount of success there.

Massey is the sixth new addition to Tim Clancy’s Drogheda side who secured a return to the Premier Division ranks back in October.

Looking forward to the start of a new phase in his career, Massey said “Tim has been telling me about the great goings on in the club and the young players there, lot of local young lads there who have great potential as well. It’s a new challenge for myself and I’m excited to get going.

“Everybody who knows me knows I’m a very ambitious person and with the squad Tim and Kevin are building we can definitely be competitive.”

It is a big move for Massey, who built up a hugely impressive roll-of-honour with Dundalk over the years including five Airtricity League winners medals, three FAI Cups and as many League Cups along with unforgettable European campaigns that included two runs in the group stages of the Europa League.

In his earlier statement regarding his departure from Oriel Park, Massey said “It is with a heavy heart that I say I will not be returning to Dundalk FC this season.

“I have spent the last eight years there and have had such an incredible experience. I never thought when I signed for Dundalk it would take me on the ride of a lifetime.

“I would like to thank all the players and staff who I have played and worked with over the years, and also to the amazing fans for welcoming me and my family to the club. I’ll cherish the memories.”

Massey’s move comes in the wake of the departure of several other key players from the Dundalk squad including goalkeeper Gary Rogers, Sean Hoare, Sean Gannon and John Mountney.
