Match of the Week: Bluebell capture Charlie Cahill Cup title

The Charlie Cahill Cup final took place last Saturday in Richmond Park in front of a full crowd reports Scott Mahon.

Bluebell who are currently mid table in the top division of LSL faced off against St. Francis who have just been promoted into said division.

So it was a taster for a fixture we will be seeing in the top flight next season.

The game started in high spirits with both sides trying to gain control and dominate possession.

There seemed to be nothing to separate the sides.

Typical of Bluebell this season, they showed that they have an extremely well drilled defence which was  marshalled by Killian Brennan at centre half an Mikey Quinn in goal.

Francis lacked that final killer pass in the first few minutes of the half.

And the first goal would come from this.

With the ‘Bell’ just soaking up the pressure, Jamie Doyle took full advantage of the Francis full backs who  were bombing forward.

He played a sublime long ball up which found the run of Glen McCauley.

Glen previously of Liverpool picked out a peach of a cross to find Josh Ukek.

Josh has been in excellent form in the back end of the season, bagging plenty of goals and assists.

Receiving applauds from the Bluebell crowd with his fancy footwork and some sheer raw pace.

The goal took the wind out of the sails of Francis for the rest of the half.

But they definitely came back out with a point to prove.

They applied pressure constantly throughout the second half but nothing was troubling the Bells captain Mikey Quinn in goal.

The defensive solidity of Bluebell was incredible on the day.

They fought tooth and nail for every ball.

Francis began to get more joy down the left flank as the game went on.

And their best opportunity for an equaliser came from the left.

As the ball was drilled low and hard across the box, it looked a certainty that striker Sean O’Mahoney would apply the finishing touch.

But it wasn’t to be, the cross had just too much pace for the rapid number nine and eventually went out for a throw in.

With only two minutes on the clock, it was a golden opportunity for St Francis to get an equaliser.

A deserved equaliser that would have been for their efforts.

Towards the final few minutes, the Bell showed all their experience by seeing out the game to the very end.

In the end it was Bluebell who lifted the Charlie Cahill Cup.

That’s only one trophy secured of the three they can possibly win this season.

Not a bad position to be in at all.

As for the league they sit in 5th with multiple games in hand on the teams around them.

As for Francis, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the side as due to other results in their league going their way they were promoted in Sunday Senior in the LSL.

Where they will once again face bluebell and all the other top senior clubs.

An unbelievable experience for both sides as well playing in front of a full crowd at Richmond Park.
