Match of the Week: Lucan United march into Charlie Cahill Cup final

LUCAN United booked their place in the Charlie Cahill Cup final on Sunday afternoon, when they travelled to Ballymun United and ended up comfortable 4-2 winners reports John Mooney.

United will face St Mochtas in the decider and, after their 2-1 win last Friday night over Glebe, it will be a hard game to call, but that’s for another day.

Despite the heavy conditions, and constant rain, this game had plenty to offer in terms of skill and goal mouth action and on the day the visitors were good value for their win, and I doubt if anyone in attendance would argue with that.

Lucan came out of the traps flying and opened their account in the eight minute when Gary Seery crossed from the left hand side, the home defence half cleared and Anthony Kavanagh smashed home to the roof of the net.

That lead was doubled on 23 minutes when Seery steered home a Dylan Clausen centre, to give the visitors a comfortable lead.

However, with 10 minutes remaining in the half the home side finally got on the scoresheet, after Adrian Mihutescu headed home a Ryan McEvoy corner.

But before the break Lucan had regained their two goal advantage when the ever reliable Jamie Doyle fired home from a tight angle, again from a Clausen centre.

The second half saw the pace drop with the visitors seeming happy to sit on their two goal lead and, really, not much happened at either end.

But with the clock running down they were handed a scare, when Ballymun bagged a second of the afternoon through George Mukete.

But like most good sides Lucan kept the best till last when keeper Ernest Lemantovic’s huge kick down field was brilliantly controlled by Seery, who then slipped a pass to substitute Danny Mhouoiwa and he delivered the goods to kill off the home sides challenge.
