McDonagh pleased with big experience

DESPITE suffering the first loss of his professional boxing career, Dylan McDonagh believes he has gained a huge amount from his clash with double Commonwealth medallist Sean McGoldrick.

The Tallaght bantamweight was asked to take the fight just four days before it, and pounced on the opportunity to fight in the main support bout of the JD NXTGEN bill in the Ice Arena in Wales.

Televised by Sky Sports, the contest saw McDonagh produce some impressive boxing in the early rounds, but he did not have the necessary energy in the tank to see off the now 7 and 0 McGoldrick in what was his first eight rounder.

“It was an unbelievable experience,” McDonagh told The Echo. “It was a real step up for me but I enjoyed it.

“In the four days I had leading up to the fight I just concentrated on making the weight and not getting distracted by the big occasion.

“I felt really good early on and felt I could win the fight, but I just didn’t have the energy levels in a couple of the later rounds.

“I definitely feel I could have taken him [McGoldrick] will a full camp behind me, but hopefully I’ll get asked back by Matchroom.

“I was taking a chance taking this fight at such short notice, but, in this game, you have to take a few chances.

“Really it was a win-win for me. It was a great experience. It gave me great exposure and I just want to thank everyone in Tallaght and Ireland for all their amazing support,” he added.

Having shipped his first defeat in four outings, McDonagh is hoping to be soon back in the ring with negotiations ongoing for his next challenge.
