McDonald handed a huge late call-up

TALLAGHT boxer Carl McDonald has been given a late late call-up for a berth on the undercard of the huge Tony Bellew v David Haye rematch at the O2 Arena in London tomorrow night.

The 28-year-old super bantamweight will face off against featherweight Jordan Gill after the Englishman’s original opponent David Berna of Hungary made a late withdrawal.

It is a massive platform for McDonald who is only four fights into his professional career and coming up against a highly-rated opponent who has yet to taste defeat after 19 bouts.

Still McDonald’s trainer Eddie Hyland believes the Dubliner will provide a real challenge for Gill.

“We only got word about this fight last night and Carl was like, yeah I’ll take it,” he told Echo.ie

“Some people are saying that he’ll stop Carl, but he won’t stop Carl. Carl is back to his old way of fighting and his head is in the right place.

“Gill is a good fighter and has a record of 19 and 0, but he hasn’t really been tested yet. Carl’s got nothing to lose and he’ll provide a big test for him,” he insisted.

McDonald, who is due to fight Colin Donovan for the BUI Super Bantamweight Celtic title in Good Counsel GAA Club on Saturday, June 16, will be coming into this contest on the back of his convincing win over Trayan Slavev at the same venue back in March.

This saw him return to winning ways after he had shipped the first loss of his pro career against Regan Buckley in the National Stadium last September.
