THE government has earmarked €116,000 in funding to tackle issues with illegal dumping, graffiti, litter and dog fouling in South Dublin County.

Of the €116,000, €80,000 is from the 2018 Anti-Dumping Initiative and is to specifically tackle the issue of illegal dumping, which is an ongoing issue in a number of areas in the county.

A further €36,000 is being allocated to South Dublin County Council through the 2018 Anti-Litter and Anti-Graffiti Awareness Grant Scheme (ALAGS).

The funding will be used for a number of initiatives, including clean-up operations, household bulky waste initiatives, awareness campaigns, preventative measures and surveillance operations.

Projects that have been approved to benefit from the €80,000 funding are the Clonburris SDZ, St Cuthbert’s Park in Clondalkin, and the Meile an Rí Playground in Balgaddy, Lucan.

John Curran, Fianna Fail TD for Dublin Mid-West, said: “I know that for many people illegal dumping is a scourge in our communities.

“Local Tidy Towns groups are often onto my office explaining that they simply cannot keep up with the amount of illegal dumping in particular black spots across the county.”

Explaining how the funding from ALAGS will be used, Deputy Curran said: “This scheme provides funding to local authorities to conduct public awareness and education campaigns at a community level targeting litter, dog fouling and graffiti.

“I welcome any initiative that will increase awareness of litter, and dog fouling in particular has many health risks in our communities especially for children. And those who continue to illegally dump must be caught and prosecuted.”
