McGregor too much for Poirier to handle

CONOR McGregor delivered on his word as he served up a first round stoppage of Dustin Poirier on UFC 178 in the  MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.
The Crumlin man overpowered his highly-rated opponent which has served only to fuel calls a title shot before the year is out.
“What the other featherweights don’t understand is that it’s a whole other game when they get hit by me.
‘I felt really good. I tore my ligaments in my thumb four weeks ago which disrupted my training.
‘I wanted to put on a performance. I said I’d knock him out in the first round and I knocked him out in the first round” he said.
The clinical manner in which McGregor disposed of Poirier certainly puts him in line for a crack at the UFC Featherweight title which will be defended by Jose Also against Chad Mendes on October 25.
McGregor, who is now ranked Number Five in his division following his latest scalp, could well earn a shot at the coveted prize in late December.
The Dubliner has not ruled out a move up to the lightweight class either, insisting that he performs better at that weight- an ominous statement for potential lightweight opponents given his fine run at featherweight.
