Men’s Shed offer outlet to learn new skills and make friendships

TALLAGHT Men’s Shed offers an outlet for men to meet new friends, learn new skills and take part in workshops and is encouraging more people to join.

Men’s sheds have rooted themselves in our communities and have become increasingly popular over the last number of years.

Ireland has becoming one of the leading nations for men’s sheds in recent years and currently, there are over 450 sheds in Ireland, with at least 10,000 men visiting a shed every week.

One of the men’s sheds in the Tallaght community is located in Glenview Lodge, which currently has six members.

Before the pandemic, the men’s shed was thriving with over 20 members but has taken a hit, like so many local groups.

Secretary Aaron Maguire spoke to The Echo about the benefits of joining the men’s shed.

“It is really for people who have retired or have health issues,” he explained.

“In my case, I was suffering with depression, and I had suicidal thoughts as well, and the shed helped me out with all of that.

“Being able to talk to people and just having somewhere to go instead of being stuck in the house.”

Before the pandemic, the Men’s Shed would go on day trips with other local men’s sheds to play golf and do other activities, but due to decreased numbers they have been focusing on woodwork until their numbers get back up.

“The door is always open, and we never judge anyone, no matter what their circumstances are,” said Aaron.

“We want people to come in and be able to have a chat.

“We are a friendly group and the kettle is always on.”

The Tallaght Men’s Shed in Glenview meets Monday to Friday at 11.30am and all are welcome.

There is also a nearby Men’s Shed called the Mojo Men’s Shed, which is located in Thomas’ parish in Jobstown and runs Wednesday and Thursday 6.30pm to 9.30pm and is also encouraging new members.
