PUPILS from Scoil Maelruain took part in the annual Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) and experienced what it’s really like to be a start-up entrepreneur, doing market research and agonising over their final business plan before investing their own cash and putting their business in motion.

The pupils combined their innate creativity with the skills they developed on the programme to create original products and launch businesses ranging from board games to storybooks to high-end craft and educational products.

“As a teacher you are always looking for projects to help your children gain valuable skills for the future, particularly with 6th class as they prepare for Secondary School,” Scoil Maelruain teacher Brian MacCormaic told The Echo.

The Junior Entrepreneur Programme provided excellent challenge that helped develop a wide range of skills, build self confidence and learn to work cooperatively.

The programme started in October when pupils in class were divided into teams with the goal of brainstorming products to sell in school.

The pupils developed prototypes, worked out costs and created advertisement campaigns.

They went before our Dragon’s Den, chaired by retired Deputy Principal Ms. McHugh, with ‘Mighty Múinteoirs!’ coming out on top.

The card game is based upon the strengths of all of the teachers and staff and the class had to develop rules in order to make it engaging for children.

The project spanned the school year and the final products went on sale in April, with all of the classes seeing very healthy profits. The classes rewarded their own incredible efforts by using their profits to enjoy a wonderful day at the cinema.
