Mixed views on location of pedestrian crossing

A PROPOSAL is being prepared on the feasibility of introducing a pedestrian crossing on the Ballycullen Road, with two locations currently being considered, reports Mary Dennehy.
After a number of years on the agenda, South Dublin County Council has confirmed that it is investigating the possibility of introducing a pedestrian crossing on the busy road – which in recent years has had to support massive development on either side.
One location is proposed near the Woodstown estate/shopping centre
Rathfarnham councillor Deirdre O’Donovan has been canvassing the council on behalf of residents and she told The Echo that while the community welcomes the response, there is mixed views on where the pedestrian crossing should go.
The council is investigating one location close to the Woodstown estate/shopping centre and also, a second site further up the Ballycullen Road at Dalriada. According to Cllr Donovan, both locations have a high volume of children and families crossing due to the shopping centre beside Woodstown and also because of the many homes up at Dalriada and the presence of a local childcare centre.
However, some residents have asked the council to be mindful of existing traffic levels at peak times, especially in the vicinity of the roundabout at Woodstown, which could be exasperated by a pedestrian crossing.
Cllr O’Donovan told The Echo: “This pedestrian crossing is absolutely needed, there are lots of young families in the area and this road can be very treacherous.
“It is early days and I just hope that the council now carries out all of the necessary surveys at the two locations and consults with residents.”
When contacted by The Echo, South Dublin County Council said: “A discussion on the need for a pedestrian crossing on Ballycullen Road indicated that there were requests for such at two locations – the southern end at Dalriada and the northern end at Woodstown and shops.
“An indication was given that a proposal would be prepared and brought back to the members.”
