Molloy and Geoghan make it a double for Sacred Heart

IT WAS a double for Sacred Heart Boxing Club at the National Junior Cadet Championship Finals held in the National Stadium last weekend.

While Abbey Molloy scooped her first National crown when beating Kirstie McDaid of Phoenix BC for the Junior Cadet 42kg title, her clubmate Brandon Geoghegan followed suit in the 50kg division.

Both boxers can now look forward to taking up their places on the Irish squad ahead of their trip to Turkey for the European Cadet Championships in August.

Last Saturday’s win for Molloy served to banish the disappointment of missing out on the All-Ireland Girl Three 45kg title last month when she emerged on the wrong side of a 3-2 split against Ellie O’Brien of Tramore in the final.

Abbey Molloy earned her first national title

This time around she was leaving nothing to chance, dishing out a standing count to McDaid in the first round before coming on very strong in the second and forcing the fight official to step in and call an early halt to proceedings.

Geoghegan, meanwhile, had to negotiate two bouts before securing his spot in the final against Richie Gentle of Phoenix BC.

Indeed, he despatched Jim Delaney of St Munchins before earning another unanimous decision against Ballybough’s Tadhg Doyle in the penultimate rounds.

In the decider against gentle, Geoghegan had to negotiate a very technical fight with an excellent display of counter punching that saw him take the opening two rounds on his way to a 4-1 victory.

There was no joy for Harley Salinger as he was forced to withdraw from the line-up after having injured his thumb in All-Ireland Championship action.

Callum Cummins was, meanwhile, unlucky not to make it past Oba Agbabiaka of Dealgan BC in his 57kg quarter final.
