Mother discovers new vocation through online accounting course

A POLITICS and History graduate once set for a Masters in Political Science, discovered a new vocation through an online accounting qualification.
Tallaght mum Sarah Murphy said her Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) Diploma caught the eye of employers.

Sarah, head of accounts at Tallaght’s TMS Environment Consultancy Ltd, developed a love for accounting whilst taking a year out before her Masters to work as a receptionist for South Dublin accounting software company, Azyra Systems.
She quickly progressed through the ranks there and now hopes to become a fully-qualified accountant.
“I left Azyra in 2011 to become a homemaker for six years,” said Sarah.
“Planning my return to the workforce in 2017, having really loved the accounting aspect of my previous job, I knew it was what I wanted to do. After very little experience, and a long career break, I was worried but the Diploma made my CV stand out. Experience was mostly irrelevant, a real testament to the programme.
“Qualified accountants I asked all recommended it. They said it carried weight and many of them had started out that way.”
Enrolment for the new academic year, starting in September, is now open, and as well as online. It is also available at Technological University, Tallaght and numerous other Dublin colleges.
ATI provides a nationally and internationally recognised accounting qualification, which can be obtained in as little as two years. Study can be full-time, part-time, and online.
The two-year diploma programme can also be the first step to a full qualification in accountancy.
“This is a pan-sectoral qualification which meets the needs of industry, practice and the public sector,” said Gillian Doherty, Chief Operations Officer at Accounting Technicians Ireland.
