Mother of two ‘at the end of her tether’ with council over dampness problem

A MOTHER is “at the end of her tether” due to dampness in her Bluebell home.
Sinéad Byrne has lived in a top floor apartment at Bernard Curtis House for eight years, and has been on the housing transfer list for the last six years.
The mother-of-two says that water has been seeping into the walls and ceiling since 2013 and her many efforts to get Dublin City Council to tackle the situation have proved unsuccessful.
Sinéad said: “It’s everywhere. The walls are soaking from rain, there is black in the ceiling, rain gets in from the window and I have a basin in the living room since December.
“The council sent a painter out to cover it up. Why, when I could do that myself. I’m staying here with two kids aged six and four. I suffer from a muscle disorder and when I’m sick, I stay with my mother in Ballyfermot.”
Bernard Curtis House is one of 20 local authority estates in Ireland which made a complaint to the European Committee of Social Rights in Strasbourg about the housing conditions.
Sinéad hopes to move back to Ballyfermot – her area pick on the housing transfer list.
“That’s where my mother lives and where my kids go to school,” said Sinead.
“I was given welfare priority in 2013 and was 24 on the list. I’ve checked, and I’m 22 now, but was told there is nothing they can do.”
Dublin City Council did not respond to The Echo at the time of going to print.
