Mural magic brightens up Familibase building

THE Cherry Orchard area is becoming more colourful by the week, with mural projects being carried out by different local groups.
After successfully designing a mural on the old Cherry Orchard railway bridge in December, the project has been moved on to a small portion of the wall at the Familibase building.
The work commenced on Monday, April 10, and the Down to Earth Theatre group, led by Grainne Walker, put the finishing touches to the mural this week.
This is the second of four murals planned for the Cherry Orchard area – a mural at St Ultan’s School will follow the Familibase project.
Last December, participants of Realt Nua, Ballyfermot Star’s rehabilitation programme, completed an art project, funded by Dublin City Council, on the graffiti-ridden footbridge in Cherry Orchard.
Upon completion, the Star participants paraded through the Bridge from Park West, Lavery Avenue and into Cherry Orchard, down to the church.
At the time, CEO of Ballyfermot Star, Sunniva Finlay, said: “The art represents the past, present and future as perceived by the participants of Cherry Orchard.
“They were fed up seeing graffiti and want the project to represent the hope they see for the community of Cherry Orchard.
“They want the residents to take ownership of their community and the art project is part of the ownership.”
