Murphy crowned Queen of Europe yet again

By Simon Walsh

LAST weekend was a truly memorable and remarkable one for Saggart’s Danielle Murphy as she claimed the Queen of Europe Drift Championship for the second time in her career.

Murphy, who led the overall standings heading into the final race event in Slovakia, put on a superb display to clinch the European crown, and she is now one of, if not the best female drift racer on the planet.

Those who have followed Murphy’s success over the last few years will know she has faced several obstacles, including engine failure and logistical problems, but she was not going to let anything stand in her way having missed out on the top prize in 2014.

“In the event itself I was expecting to run smooth, especially after what happened in Round Three in Hungary when I won with a completely different car” explained the new European champion.

“I’ve won three out of four events in this 2015 championship, along with two top qualifying pole positions, and this year I was on a mission to take this Queen of Europe Championship after narrowly missing out last year when I was runner up.”

As has been the case since Murphy began competing in Europe, the Saggart native had to rely on the help of others in her quest to win, but no one has been by her side more than her mother, Caroline.

“It’s definitely a relationship a lot of people comment about because she is always there and supports me so much”, explained the drifter.

“We are the only mother and daughter team in drifting that we know about, but we work great together, we have a special understanding like no other.”

As for what the future holds, Murphy only has her sights set on one thing; “I plan to go on and make the hat-trick next year, the title belongs in Ireland with me” she insisted.
