National title joy for Abbey and Jack

THERE was joy for Sacred Heart boxer Abbey Molloy who secured her fourth National title at the weekend.

Competing in the G5 46kg category, Abbey put in a brilliant display against Ellie O’Brien from Tramore in Waterford to win on a 5-0 unanimous decision.

It was a superb win for Abbey who lost to the same boxer in the All-Ireland in 2022 2-2 on a split decision.

On her way to the decider, Abbey got the better of Abbie Harkin from Carrigart Boxing Club in Donegal 5-0 unanimous decision to secure a final place.

Meanwhile Jack Jones came out tops in the Boy 3 44.5kk final defeating reigning Irish champion John Delaney from Urlingford Boxing Club in Kilkenny.

This is Jack’s first national title and he landed big back hands winning all three rounds to secure the All-Ireland crown.

On his way to the decider, Jack saw off PJ McDonagh from Ballyhaunis Boxing Club in the semis on a 5-0 unanimous decision.

“Their success is testament to the hard work and commitment these young boxers put in day in day out,” said Sacred Heart club official Tommy Hanrahan.

“Abbey Molloy is not long back after been out injured since before Christmas and for her to dominate her division like that shows you how hard she works.

“Jack Jones is having an amazing season doing the treble, winning the Dublin Leagues, Dublin Championships and the All-Ireland Championships.

“Jack’s success in Dublin had him selected last month to represent team Dublin in Hungary in the Akos Toth Memorial Tournament.

“Jack took gold at that beating a Hungarian opponent in the semis and Greek opponent in the finals”.

Both boxers are now looking forward to the national cadets later in the month hoping to win and be up for selection in the European Championships in the summer.
