Neilstown hosts exciting boxing tournament

NEILSTOWN Boxing Club played host to a 14-bout tournament in the clubhouse on Saturday night.

The event saw Neilstown combine with other Dublin and Leinster clubs to take on a Munster President selection that comprised of fighters from the likes of Tramore, Dungarvan and Thurles Boxing Clubs as well as Trojan BC from Kerry and Saviours Crystal from Waterford.

Joining Neilstown were boxers from St Mary’s, Trinty BC, Phibsboro, St Brigid’s in Kildare, and Portlaoise Boxing Club and their squad emerged narrow 8-6 winners.

Nathan Rogers of Neilstown was declared the ‘Best Home Boxer’ on the night after he carded an exciting win over Jack Lawlor from Thurles.

Victory over Michael Joyce of Phibsboro earned Tramore’s Loran Hurley the ‘Best Away Boxer’ accolade.

Neilstown’s Leon Fleming beat Thomas O’Byrne from Tramore on a unanimous decision while there were other wins record by his clubmates Billy Stokes, Martin O’Donnell and Craig Knowles.

Neilstown’s Leon Thomson and Robert Rogers turned in gritty performances but came undone against Philip Lavery of Tramore and St Brigid’s Garreth Dillon respectively.

John Maughan of St Mary’s saw off Conor Ivers from Thurles, but there was no further joy for the Tallaght club as John Kennedy was edged out by Michael Doyle of Thurles and Peter Fabion came undone against Ray Downey from Trojan.
