New law empowers gardai to seize quads and scramblers

THE passing of crucial legislation to address the rampant misuse of scrambler motorbikes in our communities has been welcomed this week.

The newly enacted law, an amendment to the Road Traffic Acts 1961 to 2020, empowers Gardaí to seize and detain quad bikes and scrambler motorcycles when used unlawfully, or in an anti-social manner, especially in public parks and green spaces.

Labelling scramblers as a “danger, a menace, and a scourge,” Fianna Fáil Dublin South West TD, John Lahart said he had introduced anti-scrambler legislation while in opposition, the thrust of which has been incorporated into the government’s new legislation.

Lahart points to recent events in Limerick, where 44 scramblers were seized by Gardaí, using the new powers, which underscores the urgency of the issue.

Deputy Lahart is determined to see this success in Dublin South West.

“I have written to the Superintendent of Tallaght Garda station, reinforcing the message to them that these powers are already being successfully used by Garda divisions in other regions and that the same approach needs to be replicated speedily in Dublin South West where the anti-social use of scramblers continues on a daily basis.”

The legislation equips An Garda Síochána with the authority needed to combat the illegal use of scramblers, ensuring public safety takes precedence.

“He urges community support for this crucial initiative, emphasising the collective responsibility to create secure neighbourhoods.

As the law comes into effect, Deputy John Lahart remains steadfast in his commitment to eradicating the dangers associated with scrambler misuse, fostering safer communities for all.
