Newlands land All-Ireland Women’s Junior Cup

Having won the East Leinster Championship two years ago, Newlands were crowned National champions this time around with a win over Galway Bay in the final.

After beating Ardee in the penultimate rounds, it set them up for a showdown with their West Coast opponents in the decider on Sunday.

Ann Hughes secured the first point for the local outfit after beating Fiona O’Driscoll 5 and 3 in their match.

Days after celebrating her 69th birthday, Margaret O’Connell then clinched a tight encounter with Emma Morrow on the final hole.

At the same time, three holes back, Louise Murphy won her match to end the tie and ultimately secure the spoils with a 4-1 win.

It marked only the second occasion in the century-long history of Newlands that the club was crowned All-Ireland champions.

“Absolutely delighted, it’s my second match played all year, my first was yesterday,” said Murphy after her round on Sunday.

“I’m delighted for Leonie [Colgan] and Carmel [Hogan], who are over representing Newlands in Scotland in the Coronation Foursomes. They got us to here.

“We were East Leinster Champions two years ago and it’s brilliant for the whole club to finish it off this year.”

Leonie Colgan and Carmel Hogan contested The R&A Coronation Foursomes Finals in St Andrews, Scotland, at the weekend but fell just short of the mark.
