North Clondalkin Library Community Choir makes debut

A NEW community choir has launched in North Clondalkin, and it is taking on some of the most challenging modern Christmas songs with relative ease.

Comprising of members aged eight up to 80, the North Clondalkin Library Community Choir is still in its infancy having formed in September.

Diversity, inclusion and fun are the foundations in which the choir was built upon, with people of all ages and backgrounds taking part each week.

Last Thursday, the choir made its official debut in North Clondalkin Library in front of an audience of over 150 people, including Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Emma Murphy.

The brainchild of Paula Murphy and working under the musical direction of local music teacher Noel Collins, the choir were accompanied by a trio of professional musicians at the launch.

Younger members, a lot of whom go to school in North Clondalkin, sung in the choir and played the sleigh bells and handbells for their maiden concert.

For a lot of the members, this is their first experience of being part of a choir and they have embraced it with great enthusiasm, dedication, and fun.

Among the songs which were sung are the challenging ‘Somewhere in My Memory’ by John Williams, which is recognisable from the film Home Alone, and Winter Song by Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson.

Their performance of the John Williams’ modern classic was featured on RTÉ Lyric FM as part of the Choirs for Christmas 2022 competition.

Open to new members, with no experience necessary, the North Clondalkin Library Community Choir is free to join and meets every Monday evening in the library from 6.30pm to 8pm.
