November Sports Star of the Month: Joshua Olaniyan

JOSHUA Olaniyan secured the 75kg National Elite championship for the first time in Jobstown Boxing club’s history.

Olaniyan’s journey to this pinnacle of success was no easy feat, marked by strategic bouts and resilient determination.

In the preliminary rounds, Josh faced a challenging match against Jack Brady from Crumlin BC, exhibiting a tactical approach to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

The real test awaited him in Cathal McLaughlin, the senior champion from 1 BC, off the back of a recently clinched victory in the seniors.

Against all odds that were up against him with a cut above his eye from a previous bout, Joshua adhered to a meticulous game plan, maintaining distance accompanied by an intelligent style of boxing.

After a masterclass display in the final, Joshua overcame the challenge of Chris O’Reilly from Holy Family BC in the decider.

“It was my first time winning the elites and I’m the first person from Jobstown to win the elite title so I’m over the moon with it and I’m very happy,” he told The Echo.
