Numbers signing on the live register decrease

THERE was a decrease of 11 in the numbers signing on the live register in May across the four social welfare offices in the county, reports Brendan Grehan.

Nationally, on a seasonally adjusted basis, the Live Register total recorded a monthly decrease of 3,500 (-1.8 per cent) in May 2019, bringing the seasonally adjusted total to 190,900.

The number of persons on the Live Register in May 2019 is the lowest number recorded in the seasonally adjusted series since February 2008.

In unadjusted terms there were 189,867 persons signing on the Live Register in May 2019. This represents an annual decrease of 33,635 (-15.0 per cent)

In Tallaght, the total signing on fell from 5,296 in April to 5,260 in May, a drop of 36.

Among the under-25s there was an increase of 40 with 675 signing on in April and 715 signing on in May.

In Nutgrove, there was an increase of 37 with 2,217 signing on in April and 2,254 signing on in May.

Among the under-25s there was an increase of nine with 109 signing on in April and 118 signing on in May. 

In Ballyfermot there was a drop of 40 with 1,713 signing on in April and 1,673 signing on in May.

 Among the under-25s there was an increase of two with 238 signing on in April and 240 signing on in May.

Finally in Clondalkin there was an increase of 28 signing on the Live Register with 362 signing on in April and 3,390 signing on in May.

Nationally, the number of long term claimants on the Live Register in May 2019 was 76,238. The number of male long term claimants decreased by 11,546 (-20.4 per cent) in the year to May 2019, while females decreased by 6,913 (-18.1per cent), giving an overall annual decrease of 18,459 (-19.5 per cent) in the number of long term claimants.

In May 2019, 59.8% (113,629) of all claimants on the Live Register were short term claimants.  The comparable figure for May 2018 was 57.6% (128,805). The annual fall of 15,176 (-11.8 per cent ) in the number of short term claimants consisted of a decrease of 9,135 (-12.8 per cent ) in the number of male short term claimants and a decrease of 6,041 (-10.5 per cent) in female short term claimants.
