Over 6,500 volunteers come out to help clean up the streets

LOCAL groups and volunteers played a huge part in Ireland’s official anti-litter campaign – The National Spring Clean, which ran from April to August this year.

Over 6,500 volunteers across Ireland, including members from Tallaght Community Council (TCC), The Tallaght Litter Mugs, Dodder Valley Litter Mugs and many other volunteers from Tallaght, Firhouse, Citywest and beyond came out in force to participate in The National Spring Clean this year.

The National Spring Clean is operated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce in partnership with Local Authorities and supported by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment.

This year, due to the campaign’s success in previous years, the National Spring Clean ran from April to the end of August, meaning that Spring Clean 21 is Ireland’s longest running and largest anti-litter campaign to date.

“This year we had the longest and biggest National Spring Clean campaign ever and we want to thank all the groups and individuals around Ireland who joined us.

“While waiting for Spring Clean 2022, there are several ways in which communities and individuals around Ireland can keep getting involved and do their bit for our environment.

“For example, we encourage people to do a

#2minutestreetclean every time they are out and about. Moreover, we are joining An Taisce’s Clean Coasts Programme for two initiatives: the Big Beach Clean and the Dublin Community Cleanup, and we are asking volunteers to register now!”

The National Spring Clean 2021 initiative has been an opportunity for volunteers to get out again and do their bit for their local environment, contribute to creating a more sustainable community, meet new like-minded people and make a difference.

In March, TCC adapted their Spring Clean campaign for 2021 to comply with the current Covid 19 restrictions. Instead of arranging a large community clean-up event, TCC encouraged as many residents as possible and businesses to arrange

#2MinuteStreetCleans across Tallaght which had an overwhelming response from members of the community.
