NEW bicycle parking lockers have this week been launched in Tallaght and Rathfarnham, in an attempt to pump up bike security in the area.

South Dublin County Council has launched two new Cyc-Lok parking units at the Civic Theatre in Tallaght and Grange Road, Rathfarnham, as part of improved cycle parking facilities to help keep bikes safe.

The lockers are located close to transport links, including the Luas stop at Tallaght and in Rathfarnham, the 16, 17, 61 and 75 bus routes, to enhance accessibility and support greener travel.

The two new, 24/7 bicycle lockers are now open to the public, providing secure bicycle lockers for long or short-term parking.

The lockers, which are completely enclosed, protecting bikes and belongings from third party viewing, are operated on a pay-as-you-go system.

According to the council, prices start at €1 for one hour up to €3 for 12 hours.

Each site caters for 12 bicycles at a time and is available, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

According to Mayor Vicky Casserly, these new bike lockers will “go a long way in preventing and tackling bike thefts”, with cyclists now having “greater peace of mind” when parking their bikes.

The council also stressed how the lockers have been strategically placed to encourage citizens to explore cycling and public transport as part of their daily or leisure commute.

The council has also installed three new bicycle maintenance stations at the Civic Theatre, Grange Road and 9th Lock, Clondalkin, to assist cyclists with necessary on-road repairs for improved safety.

The maintenance stations can be used to pump up tyres and tighten any loose nuts and bolts.

To use the bike locker service, download the Cyc-Lok app from Google Play or Apple Store, register your details and choose your preferred site and period of use (from one hour to 12).

Once a booking is confirmed, the cyclist will receive a unique four-digit pin code, which is needed to open and close a locker.

From March 13 to 18, the council is offering a reduced rate of €1 for 12 hours parking as an incentive for more people to go green with their transport choices over the St Patrick’s holiday weekend.

Use the code SDCCGREEN1 on the Cyc-Lok App to avail of this first-come, first-served offer.

Cyc-Lok is an Irish-based company, which has been providing a secure locker system to the public since 2014.
