Peamount Under 14 girls into cup decider

PEAMOUNT United’s Under 14 Girls team are through to the Molly O’Toole Cup Final following their 1-0 victory over Kilmore Celtic in Coolock on Saturday.

Orla Fitzpatrick fired home the decisive goal two minutes into the second period following excellent work on the right by Jaime Thompson, who beat three players before pulling the ball back from the end line.

The Newcastle side had no shortage of chances to open their account in the first half with Fitzpatrick very unlucky to break the deadlock when she got her head to Ava Cullen’s delivery only to see the ball hit the framework.

Elena Quinn saw her effort travel the wrong side of the upright while Emma Phillips did have a call for a penalty.

And, after edging in front, Peamount could well have enlarged the deficit throughout the second period with Fitzpatrick making a break from box to box only to be denied by the Kilmore goalkeeper.

If calls for a penalty after the challenge on Phillips in the first half were loud, those for the tackle made on Cullen in the second period were even more vocal, but again they were not entertained.

Still, Peamount did just enough to secure further passage in the competition- something they will also be looking to do this coming Saturday when they take on Mervue in the last eight of the All-Ireland Cup in Greenogue.

Meanwhile Peamount United’s Women’s National League team has been bolstered by the introduction of Ciara Maher from the club’s Under 18 outfit.

James O’Callaghan’s side will kick off their 2018 Women’s National League campaign at home to UCD Waves in Greenogue on Sunday, March 11.

It makes for an interesting curtain-raiser given that that the Newcastle side has acquired a number of former UCD players in the off-season.

Indeed Irish inter-nationals Aine O’Gorman, Claire Walsh and Karen Duggan have returned to the Newcastle side from UCD, while ex-Shelbourne goalkeeper Niamh Reid-Burke has also come on board.

Peamount manager O’Callaghan is pleased with the latest additions to his set-up and will be hoping to go one-step better on last season’s campaign when they finished runners-up to champions Wexford on the final day of the season.

Following on from the opening match against UCD, Peamount will travel to Tolka Park to play Shelbourne on March 18 before entertaining Kilkenny United in Greenogue a week later.
