Pedestrian (70s) hospitalised after alleged hit-and-run

GARDAI are investigating an alleged hit-and-run incident in Tallaght on Thursday, which saw a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, believed locally to be a type of scrambler.

The female pedestrian (70s) was struck while crossing the road at Killinarden Way and was brought to Tallaght University Hospital with serious injuries.

Gardai confirmed to The Echo that they are investigating a road traffic collision that occurred in Tallaght on Thursday afternoon, February 1.

A Garda spokesperson said: “At approximately 1.30pm a female pedestrian in her 70s was struck by a vehicle on Killinarden Way.

“She was conveyed to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

“The driver of the vehicle failed to remain at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

While gardai have yet to confirm the type of vehicle involved in the incident, local reports are that it was a scrambler type vehicle.

In a statement issued on Thursday evening, local Sinn Fein TD, Sean Crowe said: “A distraught family have contacted me to tell me that their elderly mother was knocked down [on Thursday] and is being treated in Tallaght University Hospital for injuries sustained.

“The pensioner was knocked down by a scrambler bike while crossing the road in Killinarden Estate.

“Residents in Killinarden should be able to walk to their local shop or post office without the fear of being hit by scrambler bikes or mopeds.”

Deputy Crowe, who personally knows the woman and her family, said that local people are “deeply upset” over the incident.

Deputy Crowe added: “New legislation has finally been passed in the Oireachtas to seize these bikes.

“It’s been highly successful in Limerick City and County, but I am not aware of this rolling out locally in this policing district.

“Prior to this unfortunate incident, I had put a question down for the next Joint Policing Committee meeting asking what has been done locally since the new Legislation has been enacted…and how it’s being rolled out locally.”
