Perfect Tymon for Jude’s new lights

Perfect Tymon for Jude’s new lights

By Maurice Garvey

AN BORD Pleanála have granted permission for St Jude’s GAA to install floodlights at a Tymon Park pitch.

The site in question – pitch number four in Tymon Park – is used by St Jude’s GAA, whose clubhouse is located further east along Wellington Lane.

The lights are the latest development scheme proposed by the Templeogue club, who cite membership support as a key factor in their growth.

South Dublin County Council refused permission for the development in September – a decision that was subsequently appealed by St Jude’s to An Bord Pleanála (ABP).

The plans contain proposals to erect and install six floodlight columns with a height of 21.34m and associated floodlights.

Control gears for turning the lighting on and off, electrical works, and connection to electrical supply are also included.

A number of local residents objected to the proposals when they were lodged last year, citing light pollution as a main concern.

In refusing the planning application last September, South Dublin County Council said the decision was based on the location of the site on a Green Belt area, and that the proposed development would have a “detrimental consequence on protected bat species.”

In deciding to grant permission for the development on March 1, ABP considered, subject to conditions, that the proposed development would be “acceptable in terms of protecting bats and their habitats.”

ABP considered the proposals “would not seriously injure the visual amenities of the area or residential amenities of property in the vicinity” and “would be in accordance” with proper planning and sustainable development.

Conditions by ABP include a bat survey, which shall be “undertaken annually at the site of the proposed floodlights” for a period of three years following the commencement of the development by a qualified ecologist.

The last condition states the proposed floodlights shall not operate outside the hours of 4pm and 9.30pm on any day and are confined to the months of October to March only.
