Planning lodged for long awaited community college

A PLANNING application has been lodged for the long-awaited permanent building for Griffeen Community College.

Since opening in 2017, the Lucan secondary school students have been housed at temporary accommodation at Kishoge Community College. A permanent building was planned for 2019 but was delayed due to planning and zoning issues.

In January 2020, a proposal to move the students to Kingswood Community College in Tallaght was reversed by the Department after there was uproar from parents about the 7km move.

Last week, it was announced that a planning application has been submitted to South Dublin County Council for a permanent build.

Local councillor for Lucan, councillor Liona O’Toole says that the planning application is a “huge step forward”.

“I was involved in Griffeen Community College when it was first initiated – the idea and when it was put in place and I was on the board,” said Cllr O’Toole.

“We went through a couple of ordeals in relation to getting temporary accommodation, so to see the actual application going through is a huge step.”

The plans for the new permanent site for the school will be located on the other side of the Outer Ring Road near Lucan East Educate Together National School.

Cllr O’Toole explained that the school will be situated in the Clonburris Strategic Development Zone.

She said: “It is the first planning application that has been submitted on the Clonburris SDZ land.

“There will be no objections to the school because everyone knows that we need a school, but there will be concerns around traffic.

“As soon as I get the confirmation as to where the entrances and exits are being proposed – that is the whole purpose of the public consultation is to allow people to make comments and observations.”
