Popular Paddy was ‘such a great businessman and gave us all advice’
AN OUTPORUING of sadness in Lucan this week following the death of popular barber Paddy Monaghan.
Mr Monaghan founded Paddy’s Barbers in Lucan. He was also a founding member of Lucan United and a former President and captain of Lucan Golf Club.
A message on social media by Paddy’s Barbers confirmed the news on January 26.
“It’s with a heavy heart that we write this post to tell you that our Dad Paddy passed away peacefully last night after a battle with illness in the caring arms of Marymount Nursing Home.
“The shop will be closed for a few days unfortunately to let us come to terms with his loss
“Thanks for understanding.”
The Facebook post received over 330 comments by Monday morning, as many residents and fellow business owners paid tribute to “an absolute legend of a man”, and somebody who “always had a smile on his face”.
Stagg Cycles said Paddy was and “always will be” a huge part of Lucan life and business.
A number of residents recalled their first haircuts with Paddy going back to the 1960s and 1970s, with quite a few former Lucan residents recalling how Paddy would still recognise them many years later if they met him around town.
Carmel’s Skin and Body Clinic said Paddy was “such a great businessman and gave all of us great advice – a true gentleman and part of the heart of Lucan.”
Lucan United posted their condolences to the Monaghan family, and held a minutes silence at all their games last weekend in memory of Paddy.
On RIP.ie, there was a similar avalanche of tributes from people who admired Paddy.
A message on RIP.ie said: ‘Paddy is the beloved husband of Kathleen, devoted father of David, Alan, Patricia and Philip, and sadly missed by his grandchildren, family and friends.
‘A funeral service took place at St Mary’s Church, Lucan, on Saturday morning, followed by burial in Esker Cemetery.’
