Progress made in relation to capital projects in county

South Dublin County Council have outlined the current position and progress that has been made in relation to major Capital Projects in the 2021 – 2023 Capital Programme.

The three-year Capital Programme will see significant development and enhancement in sectors including Tourism and Enterprise projects, Town and Village Enhancement Programme, Roads and Drainage and Sports, Recreation and Libraries across South County Dublin.

Some major projects included in the Capital Programme that have been reported on in The Echo recently is the Dublin Mountains Project, a €22 million visitor centre located at Montpellier Hill and the Hell Fire Club. A judicial review hearing took place on June 8, which dismissed the challenge to the decision of An Bord Pleanála to grant planning approval.

The development of The Tallaght Innovation Centre, with a proposed location east of the new link road connecting Fourth Avenue and Belgard Square North, has progressed, and suitable contractors have been shortlisted and scheduled to go to tender in the third quarter of this year.

The Grand Canal Greenway received part 8 approval and funding of €1.4m was approved, therefore the project will be progressed to get on site this year.

In the Town and Village Enhancement Programme, progress has been made on Templeogue Village, with a contractor now on site. The programme of works is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

In Tallaght, €32m URDF funding for Tallaght town centre covering a wide range of projects including the Innovation Centre and the civic plazas linking the pedestrian way will go to tender in the third quarter of 2021, as will the commencement of 133 cost rental apartments at Belgard North.

The N81 Landscaping Project will recommence after the summer months, and as reported last week in The Echo, work on the Energy Centre in Tallaght just commenced.

In Lucan, DHB Architects have been appointed for Lucan village improvement works and are in the process of finalising initial concept options for discussion with members.

Major road work projects include The Belgard to Cookstown Link Road, which is complete, while the East West Airton link has been designed and the necessary property acquisitions are under discussion.

The Dodder Greenway walking and cycling scheme is underway – Stage 1, Kiltipper, is complete. Stage 2, the bridges, will be completed in July. Stage 3, the links, is on site and will be completed in early 2022. Stage 4, Dodder Road lower consultation, closed recently.

There are 13 Active Travel projects underway at present. Six are on site and a further seven are at different stages of design. Three of these are the URDF funded projects in Tallaght Town centre and 10 are NTA funded.

€176m funding has also been provisionally approved to develop the enabling infrastructure, including roads and drainage for the entire Clonburris SDZ.

Regarding sport facilities across South Dublin County, the Part 8 was approved for Tallaght Stadium 4th Stand and the west stand enhancements –and the detailed design is underway. According to the local authority, construction is due to commence in late 2021.

The Dodder Valley Mount Carmel pitch and athletics track are under construction.
