Rebecca and Springfield Litter Mugs delighted with certificate

A LOCAL woman who started a voluntary clean up group has been recognised for her initiative and dedication to cleaning up the Springfield area by being awarded a certificate of appreciation from Tallaght Community Council (TCC).

Rebecca Morrin started the Springfield Litter Mugs, a small but seriously self-motivated and committed crew of litter pickers, who move a significant amount of rubbish from the area each week.

Rebecca and the litter pickers were acknowledged for the positive impact they have had on the community in Springfield when they were awarded a certificate of appreciation from TCC last week.

The certificate is being awarded as part of TCC’s ‘Our Heroes Your Choice’ initiative, which is being held this year instead of the annual in-person Tallaght Person of the Year Awards.

“We were absolutely delighted to receive it, of course,” Rebecca told The Echo. “I didn’t think anyone was really paying that much attention to what we were doing, so it was quite a surprise to be honest.”

Rebecca set up the Springfield Litter Mugs in March this year after she discovered a lot of rubbish in the area while out walking.

“It was during lockdown, and I had been going out on walks with my friend every morning before work and as we were both walking around, we were both saying, ‘god it’s so dirty’.

“We were saying it every single day and then I got sick of listening to myself saying it, so I actually got in touch with the Tallaght Litter Mugs and asked if they of knew any groups in my area doing litter picks and there wasn’t.”

Rebecca says that she was hesitant at the beginning to go out, but after the Tallaght Litter Mugs set her up with a picker and bags she went out on her own and began cleaning up the area.

“It just got started from there and as people saw me on a Sunday morning, they started joining me and now we have around 12 people every week coming out,” said Rebecca.

“I just want to thank the volunteers and TCC for recognising us and for people supporting us. When we are out in the mornings the residents nine times out of ten will say thank you or well done to us.”

The Springfield Litter Mugs meet every Sunday morning at 8am around the corner from Centra in Springfield and are open to anyone who wishes to join.
