THE Irish Red Cross in Tallaght is inviting members of the public to support its 10K virtual race, which is being staged to help raise funds to continue the work of volunteers across local communities.

Over recent months, the volunteer members of the Tallaght-branch of the Irish Red Cross have been supporting their local community through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Alongside providing a first-aid response within local communities, the team has in recent months been working on the ground across estates - linking in with cocooners and vulnerable residents, carrying out pharmacy runs and supporting other organisations and charities.

This month they also started a 5km socially distanced, weekly walk in Kingswood.

Usually at this time of the year, the Tallaght-branch would be busy providing first-aid support at community and sporting events alongside providing CPR and first-aid training.

However, like many other charities these activities and their annual fundraising events have been affected by Covid-19.

Adapting to the current guidelines, the Irish Red Cross Tallaght is now hosting its own event, a Lockdown 2020 Virtual 10K walk, run or cycle – which can be done anywhere between July 31 and August 2.

Race registration costs €15 and includes a limited edition completion t-shirt.

Elaine Boyd, who lives in Kingswood, has been a volunteer with the Tallaght-branch since January 2019.

Elaine plans to take on her 10k in her local field.

“I’d definitely encourage people to take part”, Elaine told The Echo.

“It’s good for people’s physical and mental health, it’s good to get out.

“Taking part will also be a benefit to your local community, the money raised will be used to help us to continue helping local people.”

Members of the community can also support the event by making a donation through the website.
