Resident concerned to see green area sprayed with herbicide

A RATHCOOLE resident was alarmed to discover that sizeable sections of the grass in his local park appear to have been sprayed with herbicide, with the grass in the affected area turning brown.
Pat Swan noticed the change when he was exercising in Rathcoole Park last week, and was dismayed at the condition of the affected section of the greenspace.

“Like a lot of people, I’ve been using the park to go out and get exercise,” Mr Swan told The Echo, “and it’s alarming to see such a large area of grass turning brown.
“I understand why it could be used for weeds, but it’s covering such a large area, and I have concerns about the effect it could have on the rest of the park if it spreads.
“It’s a very substantial area that has been sprayed.”
Work is currently being undertaken in the park by Irish Water, for the construction of a trunk water main between Saggart and Peamount.

The Echo contacted South Dublin County Council to confirm if herbicide had been used in Rathcoole Park, and if measures had been taken to prevent it from spreading to other untreated sections of the park, however a response was not received in time for print.
