Residents warned of children knocking on doors carrying out bogus collections

BOGUS CHARITY collectors are operating in Lucan on a regular basis, a local councillor has told The Echo.

On Tuesday (July 12), Councillor William Lavelle said he had been in Finnstown Estate where he had received complaints from residents about children knocking on doors carrying out bogus collections.

Bogus Callers

He said: “There were two or three children knocking on doors. It had been going on all week. There were adults accompanying them who were keeping a discreet distance in a car. I stopped one of the children who said she was collecting for St Mary’s Club.

“We asked her where and what the club was. The poor girl had no idea. This is happening all the time in Lucan. I think it is burgeoning on child exploitation by these children’s parents who are sending them out to do this.”

Cllr Lavelle asked all residents to demand to see identification and permits if collectors call to their door.

He said: “We have collectors collecting for the youth club, the community centre, the boxing club and it always turns out to be bogus. It’s a scam and it’s verging on child exploitation. I would ask these parents to really think about what they are doing.”

Cllr Lavelle said he took a note of the car registration in the Finnstown case and reported the incident to the gardaí.
