A LOCAL residents’ association has welcomed South Dublin County Council’s decision to relocate the proposed astro pitch in Sean Walsh Park to a site adjacent to Tallaght Stadium..

The pitch was initially meant to be located near the site of the wetlands in Sean Walsh Park, however the local authority confirmed the new planned location for the pitch last week.

A spokesperson for the St Martin’s Residents’ Association in Aylesbury, who were against the initial location of the pitch, told The Echo: “Our residents’ association welcomes investment into Sean Walsh Park by way of these improved sporting facilities beside Tallaght Stadium.

“We need to see the full Part 8 plan in detail obviously so we can properly input as the neighbouring community to this proposal.

“We are glad to see the initial location beside the wetlands hasn’t been pursued – locating an astro turf pitch in a very marshy area is not the best option here.

“We do hope the plan includes adequate security measures and access to car parking, toilets and changing facilities for teams using the pitches if they are approved.”

According to the council, preliminary design drawings and ecological screening and ecological impact assessment reports are currently being finalised, ahead of the plans reaching the public consultation stage, also known as Part 8.

The astro pitch in Sean Walsh Park is a significant part of a wider funding package based on supporting the regeneration of the central Tallaght Town Centre area, through the delivery of the Local Area Plan.

South Dublin County Council has received Urban Regeneration and Development Funding to carry out the proposed works.
