RETROFIT works on homes across South Dublin County will cost over €3.1 million in 2021.

The energy efficiency works will achieve a ‘B2 BER’ energy rating and is part of the plan for 500,000 homes that will be retrofitted by 2030.

Homes across South Dublin County will benefit from the retrofit works

In February 2021, there was an initial allocation of €2.4 million for 91 homes across the county.

On April 9 a revised allocation was submitted to the council - of €3,167,054 for a total of 117 homes - by The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

Speaking at the time of the announcement in February, Deputy Emer Higgins said: “I am very pleased to see the allocation of €2.4m to South Dublin County Council for the purpose of retrofitting and creating more environmentally friendly and cost-effective social housing. “Around 40% of Ireland’s energy-related carbon emissions come from buildings alone, which is a pretty shocking statistic.

“The 2020 programme for Government committed to the ambitious target of reducing our carbon emissions by over 50% in the next ten years and this retrofitting programme will go a long way to helping us meet that target.

“Ultimately the Energy Efficiency Retrofitting Programme will allow us to create social housing that is easier to heat, more comfortable, and has better air quality. This will have economic and health benefits for all those who will live in them.”

The average funding to retrofit each property is €27,000.

For an end terrace or semi-detached property, it is estimated to cost €41,500 to achieve the ‘B2’ or cost optimal standard.

For a mid-terrace house, a cost is projected of €33,500 and current ‘C’ rated homes are projected to cost €21,500.

The works will commence in batches of 20-40 homes on a phased basis from June to October 2021, with a target to double to 182 properties next year, with works scheduled from April to September 2022.
