Reynolds and Darragh make last eight in Portugal

TEMPLEOGUE senior badminton player Paul Reynolds combined with compatriot Rachael Darragh from Donegal to make it as far as the quarter finals of last week’s Portugese Open.

The two made a bright start to their campaign, beating German pair Patrick Scheiel and Franziska Volkmann in their first round on Friday.

This was followed by a second round triumph over the Norwegian partnership of Carl Christian Mork and Solvar flatten Jorgensen in a match that went to three games with the Irish pair battling back from one down to win 21-18 and 21-15.

Yet their run together came to an end the following day when they narrowly lost out in a thrilling quarter final clash with Denmark’s Mathias Thyrri and Elisa Melgaard that finished 21-16, 20-22, 21-14.

Reynolds did team up with his regular men’s doubles partner Joshua Magee, but they suffered an early exit at the hands of Vitalij Durkin and Nikolai Ukk.

Reynolds, who together with top Irish player Nhat Nguyen, won bronze at the Under 17 European Championships in Poland back in 2016, has every reason to be well pleased with last week’s result.
