Rovers yet to beat Drogheda

SHAMROCK Rovers will confront a potential banana peel when they host Drogheda United at Tallaght Stadium on Friday night reports Hayden Moore.

The Hoops have played Drogs on three occasions already this season and are yet to record a win, with Kevin Doherty’s side eager to maintain that unbeaten streak.

However, the cards are stacked in favour of Stephen Bradley’s men, with Drogheda United possessing a depleted squad and receiving no tickets for potential travelling supporters to the game on Friday.

The last meeting between the sides at Tallaght Stadium came in May, when Drogheda United ran out 2-1 victors through Freddie Draper and Dayle Rooney, with Rory Gaffney’s late strike a consolation.

Either side of that game, the teams shared the spoils with their first meeting at United Park a true barnstormer.

On that occasion, Graham Burke put the Hoops up but they were reduced to nine men after Lee Grace and Daniel Cleary were both sent off, paving the way for a late Drogheda flurry.

Ryan Brennan smashed the ball home in the final minute of normal time to level the game, while their most recent meeting in July saw the side’s deadlocked at nil-all after 90- minutes.

Rovers are in a different place now compared to where they were early on, putting together a run of results having shook off their early season cobwebs and mid-season cup lull to go without losing in the league since June.

Meanwhile, Drogheda’s last win came against bottom of the table UCD on September 1, losing against Bohemians in the FAI Cup, St Patrick’s Athletic and Dundalk since.

The Hoops will come into Friday night’s meeting refreshed and rejuvenated having not played a competitive fixture since September 29, a 1-0 win over Shelbourne in the Dublin Derby.

After Drogheda, Rovers have three games left this season against Cork City, Sligo Rovers, and St Pat’s as they try to secure the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier Division title for the third successive season.
