Sale of GAA land could alleviate mortgage burden

Knockmeena Lane 03A PROPOSAL to sell a small portion of land owned by Round Tower GAA Club has been approved by members of the club over the last few weeks.
The issues was discussed at the Clondalkin club EGM in April when it was decided by the Executive Committee to bring the proposal forward to the wider membership.

The triangular-shaped piece of land measures 0.5 acres and is on the Knockmeenagh Lane side of the Monastery Road complex.
Club PRO Michael McGlynn told The Echo that the land is unused and has been deemed “unsuitable” for future development because of its size and shape.
He said: “A third party has expressed interest in acquiring a small piece of surplus land at our Monastery Road complex with a view to developing a small number of residential units.
“After careful consideration of the proposal and professional external advice, the Executive Committee unanimously decided to endorse the proposal to the wider club membership.”
The sale of the land could be very significant for the club and the debt owed in relation to the development of the state-of-the-art facility at Monastery Road.
Mr McGlynn said: “The successful sale and subsequent development of the land in question has the potential to significantly alleviate moneys owed on the long-term mortgage arising from the original acquisition and subsequent development of Monastery Road.
“It has potential to have a positive impact on the costs associated with the day-to-day running of the club.”
The issue was put to the membership in April and permission was given to the Executive to sell the land.
As a result of this the Executive welcomed the club members endorsement to proceed with the project and is currently pursuing a sale of the lands through engagement with a third-party
