School parents are praised after their ‘professional and dignified’ campaign

THE Parent’s Association of a Lucan school have been publicly praised after a successful campaign to commence long-overdue refurbishment works on the school secured a positive result this week.
Last week, The Echo reported how parents of kids in Scoil Mhuire Girls NS were “outraged” State bureaucracy was stalling efforts to commence works – with children forced to wear coats in class due to inadequate heating facilities.
Scoil Mhuire GNS have waited 10 years to upgrade parts of the school, the heating system and bathroom facilities, along with the addition of three new classrooms to replace current prefabs.
However, on Tuesday, Scoil Mhuire GNS Principal Mary McIvor announced they had “received confirmation” and can “immediately sign contracts with the builder and mobilise the site at the earliest.”
The school thanked “everybody for their work and efforts in conducting a professional and dignified campaign.”
Independent councillor Paul Gogarty, said: “As a parent and councillor, I was happy to raise (the issue) in several ways, but really this is due to the diligent and persistent work of the parents association, parents and of course Mrs McIvor.”
The funding is included in a €2.2 billion five-year capital investment programme, launched by Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan in 2012, for major new school building works around the country.
Last week, parents blasted the delay in making it onto the Building Project list as “disgraceful” but there was a much sweeter tune by Tuesday, with many praising “fantastic news” and “great work by the parents’ association.”
