Schools to demolish building for new extension

PERMISSION for the demolition of an existing building and construction of a new extension at St Joseph’s College in conjunction with Scoil Mhuire Girls National School has been sought to be extended.

Permission was originally granted for the construction of a new extension to the school building in September 2016 and now they are hoping to extend that permission until 2026.

In a cover letter sent by Smith and Kennedy Architects on behalf of the Board of Management in St Joseph’s in Lucan, they outlined they they wish to extend the duration of planning permission until November 22, 2026.

The proposed development will be constructed in four phases.

A 1,817sq.m part two, part- three storey extension to the north of the post primary school which will include a new pedestrian entrance off Lucan Road and a 1,340sq.m two storey extension to the east.

The other two phases include a 55sq.m. two-storey extension for an escape stairs proposed on the west side of the two-storey classroom block and a 133sq.m. single-storey extension at the first floor of the existing PE hall.

Also included within the proposed development is the reconfiguration to existing vehicular and pedestrian access off Lucan Heights and existing entrance accessed by Scoil Mhuire to St Joseph’s.

The Department of Education is yet to give the green light for the project to go to tender.

While the school is anticipating authorisation will be granted by the Department soon, they do not expect works to have commenced substantially until the end of Q4 2021.

The expiry on the current final grant is November 22, 2021.

The demolition of existing single and two storey buildings (1,050sq.m) and construction of the new extension has a two year programme for completion.
