Scrambler torment GAA club players and endanger children

MEMBERS of St Mark’s GAA Club and residents in the surrounding area of Springfield have continued to be tormented by scrambler motorbikes, leading to a call for action to ensure the safety of children who use the club’s pitches at McGee Park.

McGee Park has seen continued damage from scrambler motorbikes and horses that are being left on the pitches, prompting the club to highlight the issues at the park before one of its juvenile members is seriously injured.

Gary Mahon, the chairman of St Mark’s juvenile section told The Echo: “My main concern is the safety of the kids.

“The scramblers are the big issue. Last Tuesday night there were six of them on the pitch while two girls’ teams were playing.

“They were basically taunting us. It’s been destroying the pitches, and has made them unplayable when the ground was particularly soft.

“We need something done before one of the kids is hurt. Starting next week, all the teams are going to be training on the pitches and there’ll be in excess of 120 kids using them.

“The kids go from five upwards. The noise alone could terrify some of them.

“While there are young kids doing it, many of the lads on the scramblers are far from kids. You’d think that they would have more sense.

“What’s it going to take? The gardaí have been up here on numerous occasions and nothing has been done. Do they need to put up a railing or a wall? Something needs to be done before it’s too late.”

Patsy McCann, the chairman of St Mark’s GAA told The Echo: “It’s been an ongoing issue since before Christmas.

“The gardaí come up, and the lads on the scramblers see them and they go off the pitch. As soon as they leave, they go back onto the pitch with the scramblers.

“There’s nothing that the council can really do. They’re also bringing horses onto the pitch, it’s ruining it.

“On top of this, we’ve also got the Department of Education totally ignoring us while we wait to get the all-weather pitch developed.

“Everyone in the club and the community is up in arms about this, and about the scramblers in the area.”
