SDCC called to double litter bins

By Aideen O'Flaherty

DUBLIN Bus should supply more bin facilities on-board and at their bus stops, and South Dublin County Council should double the number of public litter bins in the county, according to a local councillor.

Trevor Gilligan, a Fianna Fáil councillor for Clondalkin, stated this after submitting a question at last week’s monthly meeting of South Dublin County Council.

There are 675 litter bins in the county.

Cllr Gilligan asked the council how many public litter bins are in the county.

In response, the local authority stated that there is a total of 675 litter bins in the county, and that in addition to this there are 120 litter bins in parks around the county.

In respect of each individual Local Election Area, there are 131 bins in Lucan, 113 in Clondalkin, 208 in Tallaght, 119 in Rathfarnham and 104 in Templeogue/Terenure, according to SDCC.

Speaking after his question was answered by SDCC, Cllr Gilligan said that he is “calling for double the number of litter bins in SDCC.

“SDCC must encourage residents to do the right thing. An insufficient number of litter bins will encourage bad litter behaviour.”

Cllr Gilligan added: “Tidy Towns groups are continually requesting more bins in the area and I think this would go a long way to tackling the issue.

“Dublin Bus must also commit to [increasing] the number of litter bins at their stops, as well as extra bins on the buses.”

A spokes-person for SDCC told The Echo: “Currently, there are 650 litter bins throughout the administrative area of South Dublin County Council; of which 132 are situated at bus stops.

“There is no need to provide litter bins at every stop – it would not be possible nor sustainable.

“Bus stops where there is a significant litter problem are prioritised in accordance with the Litter Bin Protocol as set out in the Council’s Litter Management Plan 2015-2019.”

A spokesperson for Dublin Bus was contacted for comment, but they did not respond in time for print.
