Shamrock Rovers set to welcome fans back to Tallaght

There is good news on the horizon for SSE Airtricity League Premier Division champions Shamrock Rovers after it was revealed their game against Finn Harps on June 11 is set to be used as a test pilot for the safe return of supporters to outdoor sporting events.

Under plans that are due to go before Cabinet for approval, the Hoops will be allowed to welcome a small crowd for the visit of Harps to the Tallaght Stadium in a fortnight’s time.

The top-flight title holders are also expected to play in front of fans against Drogheda United in the same ground on June 26.

While full details are yet to be confirmed, RTÉ News have reported the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) informed the Cabinet COVID-19 Committee that up to 200 people should be able to attend outdoor events at large venues in June.

Should these trials prove successful, there is the potential of more fans being permitted later in the summer. The possibility of allowing 10,000 spectators into Croke Park for the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship in mid-July, and at least 25,000 for the All-Ireland finals in August, are also being considered.

The same night that Rovers host Finn Harps, Leinster will invite supporters back into the RDS for their Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup clash with the Dragons.

On the later date of June 20, the National Camogie League final is set to be the first game to be played before a crowd at Croke Park since March of last year.

Athletics fans will also have live sport to look forward to, with the Irish Life Health National Senior Championships due to be held in front of spectators at the Morton Stadium on June 26.
