‘Spike’ in break-ins to houses in recent weeks

THERE has been “a sudden spike” in the number of house break-ins in Bohernabreena in recent weeks, according to a local councillor.
Independent councillor for Firhouse-Bohernabreena, Alan Edge, has said that home burglaries have increased in the area in the summer months, and that there have been “a dozen or more” instances of this in the area.

Cllr Edge told The Echo: “This has been a serious problem all through July and coming into August, there have been a dozen or more break-ins and instances of criminal damage.
“We’ve been liaising with the guards about this as we want to get a community-alert system going.
“While we’re aware that the gardaí are overstretched, we’re very keen to have more involvement from community guards in the area . . . and we’re calling for a greater garda presence here as a matter of urgency.”
He added: “I think people are concerned but they’re being vigilant – there’s a real sense that people are watching out for things like strange cars in the area.”
Cllr Edge added that it is important that if anyone’s house is burgled or if criminal damage has been caused to their belongings then they should call 999 and report each instance to gardaí.
A garda spokesperson was contacted by The Echo, but a response was not received in time for print.
