IN July 1975 the church of St Dominic’s in Tallaght was formally blessed and opened, the catalyst for the creation and continued growth of the surrounding community.
This summer, the parish celebrates 40 years in existence and to celebrate this momentous milestone a special Mass will be held this Saturday, July 18, at 12 noon – to which all parishioners, friends of the parish and past priests and sisters are invited to attend.
Father Larry Collins, St Dominic’s parish priest, explained how the parish of Tallaght was established around 1969 – with the Dominicans invited to take pastoral responsibility for the parish.
Father Larry said: “The parish was divided into four area, St Mary’s, St Dominic’s, St Aengus’s and St Martin’s – with the choice of names being significant.
“Aengus was a member of the Tallaght monastery of the Culdees, Dominic was the founder of the Dominican Order and Martin de Porres was the popular Dominican brother and patron saint of social justice.”
He added: “The church of Dominic was formally blessed and opened on Sunday, July 19 1975 by His Grace, the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Dermot Ryan.
“Fr Joe Kavanagh was parish priest and Fr Ray Watters was the priest in charge of the area [with] St Dominic’s formally constituted a parish on July 11, 1984.”
The entire community is invited to attend the special Mass at 12 noon this Saturday, July 18.
The chief celebrant will be Bishop Eamon Walsh and after the Mass, those in attendance are invited to enjoy some refreshments.
