Stand By Me students tell Education Minister

OVER 200 pupils from a Clondalkin gaelscoil have recorded a song for Education Minister Norma Foley – pleading with her to sign-off on a new school building.

Gaelscoil na Camóige has operated in prefabs since it was established over 30 years ago.

As part of their campaign efforts for a new school building, students re-worked a version of Stand By Me which was launched at the Scout’s Den, in Clondalkin on Wednesday, March 13.

Gaelscoil na Camóige Principal Aoife Ní Raghallaigh said the school was founded in 1993 and is a “fabulous, thriving school, providing a high standard of education through the medium of Irish.”

“However, our school has been accommodated entirely in prefabricated buildings for 30 years.

“The long awaited promise of a school building has yet to be fulfilled, with the project being delayed time and time again,” said Ms Ní Raghallaigh.

“Our song- ‘Seas Linn’ started with an idea from Éabha Ní Mhórdha, in Rang 6, to translate the well-known song ‘Stand by Me’ to Irish and reword it.

We hope that this song will raise awareness and highlight that building work needs to start on the designated site, so that we can plan for the future and that we can continue to develop and grow as a school community.”

Gaelscoil na Camóige thanked South Dublin County Council for a community arts grant, which allowed them make the recording professionally, to Alan Doherty and to Brian Ó Gáibhín for all their help and support, and an “extra special word of thanks” to múinteoir Claire Sherry, who has been the “driving force” behind this initiative, according to Principal Ní Raghallaigh.
