‘Strong performance’ from Tallaght area tackling litter

THERE has been “a strong performance by Tallaght” in tackling issues with litter, according to recent findings in the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) Anti-Litter League survey.

The national survey, carried out by An Taisce on behalf of IBAL, focuses on central areas in a number of towns and cities around the country, as they believe that continued economic prosperity is contingent on a clean, litter-free environment.

In figures released on Monday, IBAL stated that there was “a strong performance by Tallaght.

“There was a notable improvement recorded at a site which scored very poorly last year – Tallaght Courthouse Square Car Park – this time around it was very much deserving of the top litter grade.”

A number of other locations in the locality were also praised by IBAL, including the “exceptionally clean and tidy” bring bank facility at Level 3 in The Square, while Tallaght Village and the High Street were noted as “excellent sites” that were “were well presented and maintained”.

However, the pedestrian access from Cheeverstown Road to Kilmartin Drive was highlighted as a particularly concerning location for litter.

“Pedestrian access to Cheeverstown Road from Kilmartin Drive was still a poor site – not just subject to litter but there was the remnants of a burnt pile of cans and other miscellaneous items in the high weeds,” according to IBAL.

Overall, Tallaght came 17th out of 40 locations nationally that are monitored by IBAL, and was listed as being clean to European norms.

This shows a marked improvement in Tallaght’s standing compared to the previous IBAL survey, which was published in January 2021, where it placed at 31st and was listed as being littered.
